Here are sample waveforms from two different vehicles with ignition control
modules that are starting to fail.
The waveform on the left was taken from a GM module that’s having a hard time
turning off the coil primary circuit. Notice that the turn-off area isn’t clean
and displays a lot of jagged hash.
The current waveform on the right was captured from a Ford ignition module.
This module has a problem limiting current.
To properly evaluate primary ignition performance, we need to look at all critical
areas controlled by the module. Current waveforms are just another tool that
lets us use our scopes to look into the future and play psychic tech for our
customers!
